Signs it's time
Tiles going soft and porous, so they soak up water instead of shedding it. Felt underneath torn and hanging down into the loft. Battens or rafter ends rotten. Repairs every winter that never quite hold. Moss so thick it's lifting the tiles. Any two of those together and it's usually time. One on its own is normally a repair.
What a re-roof involves
We strip the old covering back to the timbers and take it away. Rotten battens and any damaged rafter ends are replaced. New breathable membrane goes down, then new battens set out to suit the tile. Tiles or slates are laid, ridges and hips fitted. Where the roof suits it we fit dry ridge and dry verge systems, which are fixed mechanically rather than mortared, so there's no pointing to crack and fall out later. Roof windows can go in while the roof is open. Scaffold is included in the quote where it's needed.
Slate, clay or concrete?
We'll price the options that suit your roof and your street. Slate and clay cost more and tend to look right on older houses. Concrete tile is the budget choice and there's nothing wrong with it. We'll say which we'd pick and why, then it's your call.
