What goes wrong with chimneys
Mortar washes out of the joints and rain gets into the brick. Frost splits the faces off the bricks. The flaunching that holds the pots cracks and lets water into the stack. Pots work loose. Open flues with no cap let rain run straight down, and that's the damp patch on the chimney breast that nobody can explain.
Repoint, rebuild or take it down
If the brick is sound we rake out and repoint. If the top courses have gone we rebuild from where the good brick starts, re-flaunch and refit the pots. If you don't use the chimney and it keeps causing problems, we can take it down below the roofline and tile over, which ends the leaks for good. We'll tell you which one your chimney needs and why.
Leadwork
Flashings, soakers, back gutters and valleys are what keep water out where the roof meets something else. Lead done properly outlasts the roof around it. Done badly it's the first thing to leak. We replace failed lead in the right thickness for the job, dressed and fixed so it stays put.
Cowls and caps
A cap keeps the rain out of a flue you don't use. A cowl keeps rain and birds out of one you do. Both are quick jobs while we're up there and both stop a lot of damp.
